Introducing Miles Wilkinson - aka: Jeff

Multi-instrumentalist and vocal musician; with experience in over 20 performing ensembles. Regarded around the Boston music scene as versatile, expressive and smooth, an articulate string player with strong jazz/fusion/rock/blues influences. Noted as a blue-eyed soul vocalist with "impeccable taste." He interprets arrangements and parts that are true to the originals while bringing a modern vibe. Has great ears.
Jeff has a particular skill in harmonizing and blending, has excellent control over volume and dynamics, and mimics many artists. A solid heads-up, team player that respects and supports other players and creates great stage performances. Content in the back line, or owning the spotlight, Miles plays for the song and overall strength of the ensemble, with strong groove/pocket rhythms, smooth vocals, versatile playing technique and confidence in the material. Genre specialties: Fusion, R&B, Jazz, Rock, Funk

Pick-Up Artist: A quick study - learns, and convincingly performs, large volumes of repertoire in a matter of days. To wit; 44 songs in 3 days, live gigs with no rehearsals, live gigs with no advanced notice.
Primarily a string player, yet drums and percussion performance have evolved out of necessity, typically when a drummer cannot make a gig. Always a team player, Jeff steps in to cover the void. This situation has occurred in such high frequency, that he is equipped for any gig, requiring drums or stringed instruments.

Legit: Jeff has been signed with ISC (1978) w/Robin Chase Band, and Young American (1995) recording labels (w/ MRC) and has played legendary* venues such as;  The Kennedy Center - Washington D.C., Gillette Stadium - Foxborough, MA, Ryles Jazz Club - Cambridge, MA, The Beehive - Boston, The Tropicana - Orlando, FL, Acton Jazz Cafe (in the top 10 Best Jazz Clubs in the USA), The Rat Cambridge and the Hard Rock Cafe' - Boston
(* in 1996 MRC was booked at CBGB's NYC and Lollapalooza '96 - but both were cancelled due to terminal personnel changes - the band dissolved after this event)

Some Other Band

In 1974, this was likely my first proper band. The players had precipitated out of various ensembles in high school and church groups. We had a very good run in the St. Petersburg, FL area performing at a Bi-Centennial (1976) block party in east downtown for over 2000 people, numerous town sponsored beach parties and teen functions for hundreds of kids, and outdoor all-ages concerts.
Chicago Transit Authority and Bread were big on the charts at the time, so we covered those bands along with their top 40 contemporaries.
The band was comprised of: Arlene Mears - keys and vocals, John Watkins - bass, Bill Blonshine - guitar and vocals, Jim Moore - drums, and myself on lead guitar. We also had a few guest players and vocalists and got a fair amount of well paying gigs considering we were just a bunch of kids.

You'll find in the master set list, a small sampling of the songs we played in this band.

Live Wire

Live Wire Boston was started by Bill Whitney, Tom Keiser and myself in 2001. After Bill and I had finished up a swing music project,  we quickly found common musical tastes with Tom and it was pretty clear this was going to be a lot of fun and all settled in for a long run.

The bands approach was a General Business band (parties, corporate functions, weddings, celebrations,
bashes poolside or beach side etc.) and choosing music with interesting chord changes, to perform songs that were easily recognizable and dance-able.

The first member to join us was Felicia Brady (now w/ Porch Party Mamas LINK)  An all-around professional with a beautiful voice. She is playing around Boston quite a bit these days (2021) with her PPM Band.  A few months later, New England Conservatory trained, Jenny Moriarty took on the keyboard role, backing singing and being a shining beacon of positivism.  Lead singers came and went, add-in players did as well. For large functions, usually horns were added depending on the customers budget.

In total, I have played a lot of gigs back in the day but I 'm certain this band was the most road worthy and played some of the most posh venues I had ever had the pleasure to experience.
Additionally, we landed a great gig at the Kennedy Center for Performing Arts in Washington D.C. in 2007. In 2017, we played Arts on the Green at Elm Bank and following is a video reference: HERE

We'd played country clubs & high-end resorts, flew by private jet to Indiana, haunted downtown hotels late at night, private estates, night clubs, beach parties, Boston's waterfront, even a cruise ship. The list is very long.

In 2012, I left the band.  Nowadays, my buddy Tom Keiser, still runs the band and continues to have a great run with the GB business and the jazz circuits around Boston.

After college I had moved to Palm Bay, Florida for my first proper day job, and during a visit at Florida Discount Music in Melbourne, a girl walked in and said she was looking for a bass player and did any of the store employee's know of any. They didn't. So I walk over and say, "I'm playing at a guys house this noon in Palm Bay, do you want to come over and check it out?" So she arrives and asks to hear my bass playing so my friends and I launch into Creme's White Room. I get the gig as the bass player. A few weeks into auditioning guitar players with no success, I revealed I was also a guitar player (which I am) first and foremost, and proceeded down the path of auditioning bass players. We found a bass guy and then were discovered by ISC Records out of Cape Canaveral, and landed a deal. We toured the South with records in hand and sold a few. We were getting airplay and had a huge following, where club owners courted us to come play at their clubs. It was good for their business - which is what we all strive for. [Side Note: clubs in FL during the late 70's and through the 80's, had house bands - or "residencies". This is a musicians utopia with minimum gigs for 6 days running, typical 2 weeks and as good as a few months at a time. At the end of the night, you just took your mics and instruments, and left everything else in place. Audiences loved this arrangement too as they frequented an establishment, knowing what to expect and could easily find their favorite band - of course before the internet.]
Just as we got traction, opening for Lynyrd Skynyrd (post their fatal losses) and other So. Rock bands, I took a better day job in New England. Robin Chase continued for a few more months and then shifted into local notoriety.
Partial set list for an evening at the Speakeasy Lounge - house gigs had 4-5 sets, lasting till 2 or 3 AM

MRC - Portland's Art Rock Kings

l:r Steve Maclean, Dave Fields, Tim Inman, me and Todd Dadalares - The Elvis Room  Portland - CD release party and contract signing for Metamorph 1995

MRC (MeRCy) was formed by two musical contemporaries who dominated the music scene in Portland for years, Steve Maclean and Todd Dadelares. These guys are great people, performers, artists and songwriters. Steve owned and operated a commercial recording studio in downtown Portland Maine and is very much into creating sound-scapes with any and many instruments. Surreal but tight, compositions and songs you've never imagined are his playground. He is also an Associate Professor at Berklee School of Music in Boston specializing in electronic music and digital recording. Todd, simply put, is a creative ground breaker. From my perspective his stage persona is a theatrical performance that astounds, which he efficiently makes sets and sounds, real on stage, at any instant.
It was my honor and pleasure to be associated with this Steve and Todd as well as our excellent drummer and brass virtuoso, Dave Fields and the always surprising, creative and prolific Tim Inman on keys.

I joined on with the unit in 1994 to replace the former bass player. These guys were the heavy hitters in the New England art-rock music scene, I wasn't sure about even coming close on winning the audition, but wanted to give it a go! I learned a few of their songs in the 2 days I had before the audition and showed up more or less prepared and on time. The songs were complicated and nothing at all like I had ever played. The songs were sonically very dense with guitar, synths, kora, tabla, sitar and other world instruments.  With no charts in hand and taking a shotgun approach to learning the right notes, arrangement etc., I tried to emulate everything in the bass spectrum, not knowing which low notes were mine. During one song in the audition, Steve and I played the same harmonic at the appropriate time in the song, he stopped and said, "that's my note, just stick to the bass line!" I'm thinking, "Oh crap, start packing up, I just blew it!" There was awkward silence, then a few eyebrows raised, then Todd said, "Welcome to Mercy, you're in dude. We have a gig at The Rat in Boston next Wednesday night - can you make it?" We killed it in Boston that night in front of the typically cool and aloof art-rock audience. Soon after we got the recording contract. Snag some cuts that I play on: HERE, THERE, EVERYWHERE, and other PLACES

News alert: MeRCy reformed in 2012!

Steve Maclean Ensemble

This ensemble followed immediately after the collapse of MRC. After Todd and Gary left MRC, Steve Maclean called together; myself, former MRC keys player Tim Inman, and ex-MRC drummer Dave Fields.
Composer/writer/multi-instrumentalist Steve Maclean created a new work centering on the numeric sequences found in the Mayan 2000 year calendar.  A 13 X 20 matrix of numbers dictated the pitches, rhythm patterns and structure of the pieces. This brilliant, complicated and tedious work resulted in extensive preparation and an extended one day recording session, one CD and one public appearance.
As difficult as this music was (mostly because it's note sequences are not typical of any other known genre. Think of it as whole tone series with no references to formal Western music modalities. The compositions were incredibly rewarding to play and listen to.
I am proud to say that nearly all of the bass parts were done in one take. Cuts from the Radial Circuit album can be found HERE.
